Bound Together

From the start, we were threading our needles.

How do you introduce yourself? This section “Bound Together” details our first introductions and interactions as a community. Importantly, we handwrote letters, notes, and journals throughout the process. With compassion, each message addresses our personal history and desire to forge community. Through these initial moments, we threaded a dialogue that continued in our handmade journals.

 “ Dear Eric,

My name is Mia Lazar, and I am going to be your journal writing partner for the project. I am really looking forward to getting to know you!”

Letters

We wrote letters to our community partners. First impressions, these letters talked about majors, homes, favorite colors, HIV/AIDS, and (above all) excitement. Later, these letters were sent to each partner alongside student-made journals.

Here are four letters: (above) Mia’s letter to Eric, (below left) TaShira’s letter to Lindsay, (below right) Raven’s letters to Donna and Darlene

“ How do you build community during COVID-19? How do you maintain friendships?”

It’s important to know your desires when forging a new relationship.

Shruti’s entry defines community through kindness, solidarity, and outreach.

Raven’s entry addresses issues building community during COVID-19.

At first, we faced challenges connecting to our community partners. However, we stayed determined to grow our relationships no matter the barriers.
