Family

Traits & Connections at GRTC

Introduction

The theme of family has everything to do with the GRTC, and this concept extends beyond just biological family. Many members of the GRTC have formed strong bonds despite not being related to each other. Family can be defined in the people that we as individuals most enjoy being around. The figures that support and enrich the experience of life, and in some cases spark the most emotion. People of the GRTC spend an enormous amount of time with each other, hours and hours per day. While in some cases this can cause conflict, in the end, everyone shares a common bond that keeps them together. Throughout our many interviews, it became clear that the GTRC exemplifies these values of family, both biological and found.

Universal Love

She called my kids nephew and niece. And I called her kids nephew and niece. So we like blood, we like brother and sister just without the blood.

Surprise with an Old Friend’s Daughter

… Her daughter [came over at the funeral] told us ‘I’m her daughter’ … we had never met her.

… So she was like, ‘Okay, I'll be keeping in contact with you all.’

So I’m hoping that once this is over, we can all get together and just sit down and talk to her about how we cared for her mother.
